With our 14th issue, we celebrate a new way of travelling and looking at fashion in a post-pandemic era. The term slow – referring to slow-travel and slow-fashion – is re-defining both industries and HERDES wants to be a forerunner of this philosophy and lifestyle, in which quality and savoir-faire are given importance, as opposed to fast and irresponsible consumerism.
For this reason, we want to embody this philosophy together with the slow-reading concept, in which each issue is independently designed and produced according to the content and destination, exploring different types of paper, different typographies and different layouts, with a book format and an exquisite finish. With this we want to go beyond the established canons of periodicals and turn our publication into a collector’s item for the most demanding bookshops and coffee tables.
The Icelandic Issue kicks off this new concept, where the slow-travel is very present, a place where you can calmly explore its regions, its culture and its language. As well as understanding its traditions, its way of life, its gastronomy, its products and its beautiful environment.
Iceland is a complex country – because of its climate and geography – but of incalculable beauty. As a result, the customs are quite distinct and somewhat peculiar. We all know that the Icelanders are descended from the Vikings, strong and rigid but very clean warriors, so water is a vital element in their lives, either because it is a source of life, they are surrounded by it or because they use it as thermal baths thanks also to its volcanic geography.
Due to the extreme climate, they are very homely people, so their social life is usually at home and when the weather does not allow them to go out, they spend their time reading and doing artistic activities. That is why we can find a lot of artistic and design talent.
